With a heritage dating back to the 1930s and based in HM Naval Base Portsmouth, 1710 Naval Air Squadron is a mixed Civil Service and Tri-Service Military team of technical specialists from multidisciplinary backgrounds. We use scientific and engineering reasoning to overcome UK Ministry of Defence aircraft operational issues spanning operations across the globe, enhancing aviation and general military capability. We are currently leading the development and application of Data Exploitation and AI projects within the UK MoD Aviation domain and need further support to grow the capability available to frontline.
This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.
Job description
As our software engineer you will be dealing with creating new software products, applying available technology, but also looking to integrating new and emergent ways to solve problems. You will be maintaining and updating already developed software, whilst applying modern approaches and standard methodology. As part of the full product lifecycle, you will be looking into research, design and testing of applications as well as the through-life support and end-of-service withdrawal.
Travel opportunities to additional sites, off-site trials, conferences, and visits to external partners.
Responsibilities
As a software engineer within our team, you will be responsible for:
- Development of new software solutions
- Maintenance of existing applications which include ASP.NET and C# developments (among others)
- Investigation and rectifications of malfunctions, bugs and issues
- Provision of ongoing support to existing software tools
We'll support you with a team mentor who will guide you in your structured training and professional development within the team.
Person specification
Your existing skills and experience will be invaluable and a passion for digital and data will be vital for the role.

- Service Focus: You have an awareness on how to maintain focus on the whole life of service delivery - from idea to operation.
- Software development experience: you have experience in a data engineering field within a professional or personal setting.
- Passion for Technology: You understand core technical concepts related to the role and can apply them with guidance.
- Approach to work: You have an enthusiastic, adaptable, and inquisitive approach towards new challenges.
Desirable criteria:
- Requirements gathering: you understand how to capture user and stakeholder requirements and know how to translate this into technical steps.
- Technical knowledge: you are familiar with a variety of coding languages like SQL, C#, Python and Java script (among others).
- You hold a valid UK driving licence.

Qualifications
We seek applicants with strong English and Maths skills and a Level 3 qualification within a digital related field, or a minimum of two years equivalent practical experience related to software engineering.
